Introducing the New and Improved NASTT - BC Carbon Calculator

Since 2007, NASTT BC has offered project designers a simple online Carbon Calculator to identity the reduction in greenhouse gases realized with trenchless technology. Now, in 2010, NASTT-BC, with the assistance of Vancouver-based PW Trenchless Construction Inc, is pleased to offer this upgraded, free-to-use Carbon Calculator designed by Habitat Enterprises of Vancouver. The project has been managed by the Action on Climate Change Team (ACT) of Simon Fraser University, with programming support from Be Loud Web Services and Small Feet Inc.

The improved calculator makes planning - and saving - easier.

The previous version allowed planners in the design stage to estimate carbon emissions from traditional open cut excavations based on machinery required to remove, dispose of and replace soil, as well as traffic disruptions. Broad estimates of emission reductions from trenchless technologies were then provided based on industry averages. Some updates in this new version include:

* Consideration of a greater number of project activities;
* Application to 11 trenchless construction methods, up from the former 3;
* Scenarios can be stored for future reference, allowing registered users to return and rework calculations;
* Summary reports can be generated to share results with colleagues and funders.

Members comprise a broad spectrum of individuals, agencies and companies involved or concerned with providing gas, water, sewerage, communication and electrical services, including: contractors, researchers, engineers, manufacturers, consultants and developers interested in underground systems and the application of Trenchless Technology.
